Cyclone
Monitoring
( Back to Cyclone
Warning Services )
A constant
watch is kept on the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal for the likely
genesis of tropical cyclones with the help of satellite imagery, particularly
those from the Indian geostationary satellite, INSAT. Data from ships
and ocean buoys is also very valuable. When the systems come nearer
to the Indian coastline, their subsequent development and movement is
monitored by a chain of Cyclone
Detection Radars set up by IMD to cover the entire coastal belt.
The likely movement of the storms is predicted with the help of track
prediction models and by reference to past climatology which has been
built up using 125 years of cyclone data.
