Supply of Earthquake data – Guidelines &
Procedure:

Meteorological Department (IMD) is the nodal government agency responsible for
monitoring earthquake activity in and around the country. Following are the guidelines
and procedure for earthquake data supply:
(i) A certificate on earthquake occurrence is issued to the concerned insurance company on payment basis for settling damage claims after seeking approval of competent authority of the department. For obtaining such a certificate, the insurance company should make a formal request to DDGM (Seismology), India Meteorological Department, Lodi Road, New Delhi-3 intimating the name of claimant and his / her full address of communication, Policy No., Claim No., exact date and approximate time of occurrence of earthquake and place of damage due to the earthquake etc. Also, a certificate of undertaking in the prescribed proforma (Anexure-I) is required to be furnished by the insurance company.
(ii) Seismicity reports / earthquake data, in respect of different places / sites for setting up various types of projects, such as hydroelectric projects, thermal power projects, Refineries, high rise buildings, railway bridges, community centers and other structures of importance, is supplied to the concerned authorities of central / state governments, public undertakings, multinational & private companies, disaster managements agencies etc. Such reports / data are supplied on payment basis after seeking approval of competent authority of the department. A certificate of undertaking in the prescribed proforma (Annexure-II) is also required to be furnished by competent authority of the concerned office / organization.
(iii) Earthquake data is also supplied to educational / research institutions for promoting research in seismology and allied fields. For obtaining such data, the user should make a formal request to DDGM (Seismology), India Meteorological Department, Lodi Road, New Delhi-3 through his / her Head of the department intimating details of the research project. A certificate of undertaking in prescribed proforma (Annexure-III) has to be furnished by the Head of the department along with the formal request for data supply. The supply of data, on free of cost basis, may be considered after proper scrutiny and assessing actual requirement of data.
