  • IMD has a large computer facility equipped with a CYBER 2000U System at RSMC New Delhi for supporting R&D activities and to meet some of service obligations at the national and international levels.
  • CYBER is a mainframe computer that supports one processor. The computer ethgov in Local Area Network (LAN) with the message switching system in the Regional Telecommunication Hub for accessing GTS data and also with satellite imagery data from IMD’s INSAT Computer (IMDPS).
  • The computer system is provided with a large number of standard and utility software packages. The system’s main applications software is a comprehensive meteorological graphics applications software (AMIGAS II).
  • Most of RSMC’s operational activities have been automated on the CYBER computer. Plotting of all extended charts, both sea level and upper air and various auxiliary charts is carried out on the attached plotting machines.
  • A Limited Area Analysis Forecast System (LAFS) comprising automated decoding of observational data received on GTS, an objective analysis scheme based on three multivariate optimum interpolation procedure and an advanced multi layer primitive equation model runs on the CYBER system in operational mode daily twice a day.
  • Analyzed and prognostic charts produced by the LAFS are transmitted to other centers as a part of RSMC New Delhi’s responsibility under World Weather Watch. The forecast model is also used for giving tropical cyclone track predictions.
  • Besides RSMC products from the LAFS, grid point data received from world Area Forecast Center Washington/Brackne11 are also processed for preparing documentation charts for aviation purposes under the world Area Forecast System.
