WEATHER OVER DELHI DURING THE MONTH OF NOVEMBER 2010

Rainfall

November is the driest month for Delhi with average rainfall of 4.3 mm and an average of 0.7 days of rainfall 0.3 mm or more. The rainfall activity during November 2010 was more than the normal with four days of recordable rain and three days of trace rainfall. A total of 26.0 mm of rainfall was recorded during this month; out of which18.0 mm of rainfall was recorded on 14 November 2010. This increased activity was because of the northward penetration of the easterly waves into the northern peninsula; and on some occasions upto Rajasthan.  A Severe Cyclonic storm (JAL) during 04 – 08 November and a well marked low pressure area over the Bay of Bengal during 15 – 17 November emerged into the Arabian Sea after traversing across the south peninsula. Another low pressure area which formed over Arabian Sea on 21 November also moved northwards along the west coast. These systems moved northwards along the quasi-permanent high amplitude easterly trough off the west coast, leading to incursion of moisture into Rajasthan and upto Delhi. Concurrent movement of troughs in upper tropospheric westerlies  enhanced the rainfall activity over Delhi and neighbourhood. There have been only four more years since 1901 when rainfall of 26 mm or more has been recorded in Delhi during the month of November; the highest being 100.1 mm during November, 1972

Temperatures:

The maximum temperatures remained nearly normal 13 November. The rainfall activity and the associated cloudiness kept them below normal thereafter.  The minimum temperatures remained markedly above normal from 12th to 27th and above normal during most other days of the month.  The mean maximum and minimum temperatures for the month of November 2009 were 27.6ºC and 15.6 ºC against their long period average of 28.3ºC and 12.8ºC, respectively.  The lowest minimum temperature of 09.9ºC was recorded on 29 November, 2010.
